Workman Compensation

No matter what state you have your business in you are required by law to provide some form of workman compensation insurance for everyone you have in your employ. This insurance serves two purposes, first it provides medical care and lost wages coverage for your employees and second it protects you in case your employee tries to sue you for damages in a court of law. However workman compensation insurance coverage does not stop at the door to your business, if your employee is required to drive a vehicle while on the clock and gets into an injury type accident, your insurance will cover his medical costs and any lost wages while he recovers.

Many occupations come with a risk of certain illnesses and diseases, workers comp also is designed to take care of any employee who gets sick as a direct result of the job he performs. Workman compensation insurance is a no-fault type of insurance, which means that no matter who is really to blame for the accident or illness the employee will be taken care of. The insurance must also cover lost wages while the employee is out of work recovering from his injury or illness, in the event of an employee death it will provide limited compensation to the surviving family. The amounts of coverage and compensation vary from state to state dependent upon each state's laws. Around the turn of the 20th century many states introduced some form of workman compensation insurance in part due to public outcry over the terrible working conditions in many jobs that results in serious injuries and in part by employers who could no longer afford lawsuits brought against them by injured workers.

The cost of these lawsuits to the employers was rapidly spiraling out of control causing many of them to file for bankruptcy protection. The first state to pass laws requiring workers comp insurance was California in 1910 with many others quickly following suit. Thanks to workman compensation laws anyone who is inured on the job in any way is entitled to be given access to the proper medical care.

This includes use of the emergency room, doctor's fees, hospitalization and any form of rehabilitation needed to return them to the same level of health they enjoyed prior to their accident if possible. If the accident involves an injury that leaves them unable to return to their job many policies also cover the cost of retraining and disability benefits both short and long term as necessary to provide for the well being of the employee. Finding affordable workman compensation insurance can be a challenge especially in today's economic environment, medical costs are skyrocket and it seems like insurance premiums are too.
